Abstract
JELVEZ-RETAMAL, Franco et al. Analysis of STEM activities in mathematics textbooks for 3rd and 4th year of secondary education. Areté [online]. 2025, vol.11, n.22, pp.188-210. Epub Nov 17, 2025. ISSN 2443-4566. https://doi.org/10.55560/arete.2025.22.11.12.
This research addresses the analysis of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematic) activities in mathematics textbooks for 3rd and 4th years of Secondary Education in Chile. The objective is to examine how these activities promote interdisciplinary competencies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics topics. The methodology is qualitative, based on content analysis applied to three textbooks-one public and two privates. A total of 104 activities were evaluated according to their content axis, STEM discipline, integrated curriculum approach, and promoted skills. The results show a predominance of activities focused on algebra and functions, with an emphasis on science and technology disciplines, in addition to mathematics, along with a connected curricular approach. The most prominent skills include processing and analyzing evidence, seeking and analyzing information, optimizing resources, and problem-solving. In conclusion, there is a lack of deep interdisciplinary approaches, as well as a notable disparity between public and private textbooks in the quantity and diversity of STEM activities.
