The formative evaluation is an instrument that makes possible the opportune educational intervention since it allows readjusting the work carried out in learning and constantly evaluating the progress in relation to the formative objectives. Considering the above, this article was developed, which had the objective of characterizing the formative evaluation in the Colombian educational context. Methodologically, the article was developed from a documentary approach with a bibliographic design. Finally, it can be stated that the Colombian Educational System characterizes formative evaluation as a process focused on how the student learns and that it must be eminently motivating, guiding, comprehensive, however, it is a practice applied in educational work that requires a more eager systematization and corresponded with reality.
