The objective of the article was to analyze reflective modernity as a methodological current and its impact on the construction of the sustainable city. The study is descriptive because it was based on the review of specialized literature in the lines of research in reflexive modernity, sustainable development and sustainable cities. The results achieved with the review of the guidelines of reflexive modernity and the foundations of sustainable cities, demonstrated the need to rethink the models of production and consumption characteristic of industrialized societies to incorporate the sustainable dimension of development. In conclusion, reflective modernity is an approach that can be used for the promotion and consolidation of sustainable cities, which are constituted from the nature, resources, characteristics and problems of each particular urban territory. Such cities make up a safe and adequate habitat for the physical and social development of individuals.
