The objective of the research is to evaluate the impact of teaching job skills on students' preparation for the world of work and their professional development. A descriptive cross-sectional study was developed through a survey of 287 intentionally selected students, considering the poverty of the area. The study evaluated how the teaching of labor competencies in three secondary schools in the province of Cartago, Costa Rica, influences the labor preparation of students of different socioeconomic levels. The information obtained revealed that students from areas with higher income levels choose their school because of its prestige, while those from poorer areas show lower motivation and perception of job readiness. The research reaffirmed that inequalities in education negatively affect students in high poverty contexts, thus suggesting an urgent revision of the educational system
