Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience; medical procedures result in situations where the neonate is exposed to painful events. The aim of the study is to compare pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies for pain relief of the neonatal critically ill patient. A systematic review study is developed, the population of 785 articles from databases, the studies were filtered with inclusion and exclusion criteria obtaining a sample of 31 works. Pain management should be carried out in a multimodal way through the use of non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. The most frequent medications are analgesics, opioids, anesthetics and muscle relaxants, while among the non-pharmacological recommendations are: breastfeeding, kangaroo mother method and non-nutritive suctioning. Pain management in the newborn is considered multifactorial and multimodal, the approach is not only pharmacological but also includes independent activities.
