University Extension in the latinamerican Context: Historical Milestones of a Social Commitment in Constant Transformation. Cienciamatria [online]. 2025, vol.11, n.21, pp.278-307. Epub 10-Dez-2025. The purpose of this article was to examine the historical evolution of university extension in Latin America, highlighting relevant milestones, conceptual models, and the influence of social, political, and economic dynamics that have contributed to its development, in order to understand its transformative role from the perspective of university social commitment. The research was conducted through a hermeneutic documentary study based on the interpretive paradigm, using qualitative tools for the analysis of secondary sources. The hermeneutic exercise reveals how university extension has moved from initial unidirectional, paternalistic, and welfare-oriented approaches to more inclusive and participatory models based on dialogue and critical awareness. In response, a comprehensive proposal based on bio-eco-ethical-social principles emerges, seeking a balance between academic purposes and global responsibility, integrating ethical and critical perspectives into its orientation.
