The study is a theoretical review whose main objective is to understand the main challenges for citizenship education in today's society. For this purpose, citizenship education was approached from the analysis of the theories of constructivism, connectivism, Dewey, Kohlberg and the multicultural citizenship model. The main challenges that have been considered are a) Citizen training in the 21st century b) Citizen training for democracy, c) Challenge in moral and ethical training. The importance in these times of taking into account the main values such as tolerance, respect, interculturality in order to have citizens prepared for environmental, social and political problems and to achieve an integral and global citizenship education.
