The general objective of the research was to analyze early mathematical knowledge in transition students in Barranquilla, Colombia. A methodological design was used that integrates the documentary, bibliographic and analytical-synthetic approaches. It focused on the collection and critical analysis of a wide range of documents and written sources that included a thorough review of peer-reviewed articles from scientific journals. It was complemented with the application of the analytical-synthetic method that facilitated a comprehensive and deep understanding of the phenomenon studied. It is concluded that the acquisition of knowledge is not subject to the age of the students but depends largely on the nature of the educational institution and how effective pedagogical mediation is. These elements have a decisive influence on the scaffolding process and on future academic performance.
