Objective:

to determine the extent of Vitamin D deficiency in the development of osteoporosis.

Descriptive review.

Results and conclusions:

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease characterized by loss of bone mass, reduced muscle strength and increased risk of fractures. In Ecuador, 19% of adults over 65 years of age suffer from osteoporosis. This pathology has a multifactorial origin, being Vitamin D deficiency an important cause since it intervenes in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus, useful elements for bone formation. Therefore, it is essential to establish prevention measures focused on this area to reduce the appearance of the pathology.
