With the aim of describing the influence of gender on the oral health of the population, a bibliographic and documentary review of scientific articles was carried out, with emphasis on those published in the last five years; original works and systematic reviews were reviewed in both Spanish and English, in full text and in digital databases. Gender as a social construct is an intermediate determinant of health and conditions the health-disease process in men and women. The incidence and prevalence of oral diseases, the reason for consultation, the attitude towards pathologies, as well as consultation attendance are different according to gender. In the light of the findings in the literature, the health-disease process in dentistry is influenced by gender; women do not get sick in the same way as men, so strategies are needed to meet their health demands.
