Introduction:
Therapeutic hypothermia is a treatment that involves lowering the body temperature between 36 and 32 °C for 24 hours, minimizing neurological damage in patients with cardiorespiratory and post-traumatic complications.
Objective:
To analyze hypothermia as a therapeutic treatment in intensive care patients.
Method:
A systematic review was conducted, with a documentary design based on the evidence matrix and PRISMA guidelines.
Results:
A total of 478 documents were obtained, 47 of which were selected as a sample. Seventeen (36.2%) detailed its use in patients with cardiorespiratory arrest and traumatic brain injury, 15 (31.9%) related to the application of the procedure, and 15 (31.9%) debated its effectiveness.
Conclusions:
The use of therapeutic hypothermia remains controversial, as there is no conclusive and definitive evidence demonstrating improvement in neurological stability.
