Objective:
To analyze the benefits of oral hygiene in patients hospitalized in intensive care units.
Method:
A descriptive narrative review was conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. Studies published between 2019 and 2024 in Spanish and English on oral hygiene in intensive care units were included. The search used DeCS terms: “oral hygiene,” “intensive care,” “ventilator-associated pneumonia,” and “nosocomial infections.” Thirty articles were selected using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results:
The main benefits identified include a significant reduction in ventilator-associated pneumonia (relative risk reduction: 0.77; 95% CI 0.60-0.98), decreased ICU mortality (OR 0.86; 95% CI 0.70-1.05), and reduced hospital stay. The implementation of standardized oral hygiene protocols with tooth brushing and mouthwashes showed greater effectiveness. Specialized nursing care is essential for adherence to oral hygiene protocols.
