Pressure injuries in critical patients constitute a serious public health problem, being preventable in most cases with adequate repositioning measures.
Objective:
To determine the benefits of postural changes for the prevention of pressure injuries in critically ill patients.
Method:
Qualitative and descriptive bibliographic review conducted in PubMed, LILACS, BVS, ELSEVIER, Research Gate and SciELO databases, using keywords: pressure injuries, pressure ulcers, critical patients, ICU.
Results:
From 450 initial bibliographic sources, after applying inclusion-exclusion criteria, 36 relevant sources were reviewed. Postural changes demonstrated effectiveness in tissue pressure redistribution and blood flow improvement.
Conclusions:
Postural changes are beneficial for preventing pressure injuries because they redistribute pressure in soft tissues, facilitate unloading of bony prominences, improve blood flow, oxygenation, functional capacity and comfort of critical patients.
Palabras clave : Postural changes; pressure injuries; critical care; primary prevention.
