Background:
The COVID-19 pandemic spread worldwide since early 2020, causing work overload to nursing staff in COVID-19 Intensive Care Units, who worked shifts longer than 12 hours with high risk of contagion.
Objective:
To estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 in nursing staff of the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital de Especialidades "Carlos Andrade Marín", Quito, Ecuador, during the first year of the pandemic (March 2020-April 2021).
Method:
Descriptive, cross-sectional, observational and prospective study, developed between March 2020-February 2021, with 101 nurses through semi-structured survey and statistical analysis to identify risk factors.
Results:
The prevalence of COVID-19 was 68.3%. The main risk factors identified were working hours and gender.
Conclusion:
More effective measures should have been implemented to avoid contagion in nursing personnel and reduce viral prevalence.
