Introduction:
Unplanned extubation is an adverse event inherent to medical care that causes complications in intensive care unit patients.
Objective:
To interpret the incidence of adverse events associated with extubation in critically ill patients.
Method:
Observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study using a systematic review according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Articles published between 2018 and 2022 in Spanish and English, with full access, were included, excluding neonatal and pediatric populations.
Results:
Twenty-two articles were analyzed from 511 initially identified. The incidence of unplanned extubations ranges from 8 to 16%. The main triggering factors were inadequate sedation and altered mental status (23%), followed by poor equipment and poor device fixation. The most frequent complications included laryngotracheal injuries and soft tissue lacerations.
