Objective:
To determine the risk factors for pressure ulcers associated with elderly patients in critical care areas.
Method:
A descriptive-observational bibliographic review was conducted, with exegetical analysis of scientific documents from primary and secondary sources. Databases such as Google Scholar, Elsevier, and SCOPUS were consulted, including studies in patients aged 65 years or older, less than 5 years old.
Results:
The main risk factors identified were: lack of position changes (45%), inadequate daily bathing (35%), poor skin lubrication (72%), and lack of sheet change (11%). The most affected areas were head (9%), lower back (9%), heels (25%), and lower extremities (23%), with up to 4 bedsores per patient. Using the Braden-Bergstrom scale, high risk was detected in 57% of studied patients.
