HERRERA-VILLAGRAN, Johanna Patricia; RODRIGUEZ-PLASENCIA, Adisnay y ROMERO-FERNANDEZ, Ariel José. Relation of prolonged sedoanalgesia with acute cognitive dysfunction in patients with COVID-19. Salud y Vida [online]. 2025, vol.9, n.esp1, pp.519-528. Epub 30-Oct-2025. ISSN 2610-8038. https://doi.org/10.35381/s.v.v9i1.4694.
Objectives:
To establish the association of prolonged sedoanalgesia with acute cognitive dysfunction in adult patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in intensive care units.
Method:
Qualitative explanatory research through bibliographic review of scientific articles published between 2018 and 2022. Specialized databases including Scielo, Lilacs, Dialnet and PubMed were used. Inclusion criteria: articles related to adult patients with COVID-19 in ICU who required ventilatory support and sedoanalgesia.
Results:
Prolonged sedation in COVID-19 patients can last several weeks, increasing the risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with hypoxic injury. Hyperactive delirium was the most characteristic manifestation due to factors such as prolonged immobilization, sleep deprivation, family isolation and fear. It was identified that at least 65% of critical COVID-19 patients develop delirium during their ICU stay.
Conclusions:
Prolonged sedoanalgesia in COVID-19 patients represents a challenge for ICU teams.
