Objective:
To interpret urinary catheter infections in intensive care units through systematic review of scientific literature.
Method:
Retrospective observational study at exploratory level based on bibliographic review of documents published in scientific databases during the last ten years, using specific search algorithm with descriptors "urinary tract infection", "intensive care unit" and "urinary catheter".
Results:
Catheterization duration constitutes the dominant risk factor for catheter-associated urinary tract infections, with up to 95% of urinary infections in ICU related to indwelling catheters. Bacteriuria develops at average rate of 3-10% daily per catheterization day. Most prevalent pathogens identified were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Candida sp, Enterococcus sp, E.coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Conclusions:
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections represent significant complication in ICU with high morbimortality.
