Objective:

To interpret the nursing care process in adult patients with severe traumatic brain injury in intensive care units.

Method:

Literature review with systematic exploratory research, qualitative-observational modality, retrospective cross-sectional type, non-experimental design under PRISMA methodology protocols. Database search was performed in Google Scholar, Sciencedirect, ERIC and Pubmed, period 2018-2022.

Results:

The nursing care process constitutes an essential scientific systematic tool that, when executed correctly with technical knowledge, allows providing quality care to ICU patients with severe TBI aimed at prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and detection of complications. The importance of exhaustive evaluation of neurological status, planning of individualized care, control, monitoring and prevention of complications was identified.

Conclusions:

The nursing care process is a continuous dynamic approach given that the patient's condition can change rapidly requiring rapid decision making. It involves exhaustive assessment of neurological status, individualized care planning and continuous evaluation of patient response.
