Objective:

To describe the Cuban experience with three specific educational programs for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus: Vacation Camps, Home for Infants with Diabetes and Coexistence, analyzing their methodology and differences.

Method:

Three programs implemented in Cuba between 1969 and the present are described. Data were obtained through documentary review and direct experience of the authors in implementation.

Results and conclusion:

The Vacation Camps (1969-1990) operated on a boarding basis for two weeks, emphasizing independence and socialization among peers. El Hogar (1979-1990) provided comprehensive protection to patients from vulnerable families. Las Convivencias (1993-present) operates as a day hospital integrating patients and families for a week, allowing specialized clinical evaluations. The experience of more than five decades provides evidence on the effectiveness of different educational approaches adapted to the local context, constituting a valuable reference for similar strategies in the region.
