Introduction:
Mandibular retrognathism is a common and visible anomaly in the mandible, in which it appears retracted with respect to the maxilla and is generally associated with bony dysplasia of the mandibular bone.
Objective:
To describe the clinical and functional changes in patients with mandibular retrognathism treated with the modified Nance Button appliance.
Materials and methods:
An experimental, open study was carried out, with historical control in the Orthodontics service of the Provincial Stomatological Clinic of Sancti Spíritus, between January 2022 and March 2024. 20 patients who met the selection criteria were included, through assignment intentional, those who formed the study group. Theoretical, empirical and statistical methods were used. Demographic, clinical and functional variables were studied.
Results:
After one year of treatment, in the study group, the overjet decreased by 3.85 mm, the overshoot by 1.45 mm and the protrusive movement by 3.85 mm. Increased left lateral movement by 1.1 mm, right lateral movement by 1.15 mm. Similar changes occurred in the control group, but more marked - with statistically significant differences - in the highlight.
Conclusion:
The clinical and functional variables in patients treated with the modified Nance button evolved towards normal criteria and in a similar way to the Neville Bass appliance, which suggests the consideration of its use as an alternative for the treatment of patients with mandibular retrognathism.
Palabras clave : mandibular retrognathism; functional appliances; class II syndrome.
