REVILLA CRUZ, Lorena  y  TOALONGO MORENO, Jenniffer Estefanía. Mortality of heart failure in patients who attended the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Specialty Hospital during the period 2021-2022. Introduction:

Heart failure is considered a growing pandemic. Numerous risk factors are associated with its mortality, such as sex, age, arterial hypertension, and diabetes mellitus.

Objective:

To determine the mortality rate of heart failure in patients who attended the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Specialty Hospital during the period 2021-2022.

Materials and Methods:

This is an observational, descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study conducted on patients with heart failure treated at the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Specialty Hospital during the period 2021-2022. The information was obtained through the review of medical records in the AS400 system.

Results:

Out of 168 patients studied, 63 died, representing 37.5%. The age group with the highest mortality was the elderly (≥60 years) with 56 individuals, accounting for 88.8% (Chi-square of 0.39), and the most affected sex was male, with 42 patients, representing 66.7% (Chi-square of 0.63). The only significant risk factor associated with mortality in this pathology was anemia (p=0.010), with a total of 91 patients (54.16%), of whom 39 (42.85%) died.

Conclusions:

The mortality rate of heart failure in this study is 37.5%, with a greater impact on the elderly age group and the male sex. This and other analyzed variables, such as arterial hypertension, were not significant, unlike anemia.

Palabras clave : heart failure; anemia; diabetes mellitus; arterial hypertension; body mass index.
