TIRADO, Paola-Patricia Terán. Approach to Emotional Regulation from the Second and Third Generations of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Revista Docentes 2.0 [online]. 2026, vol.19, n.1, pp.146-154. Epub 29-Mayo-2026. ISSN 2665-0266. https://doi.org/10.37843/rted.v19i1.762.
Emotional regulation shapes the quality, intensity, and expression of emotions. The objective of this research was to examine the contributions of second- and third-generation cognitive-behavioral therapies in addressing emotional dysregulation. Using an interpretive paradigm and the hermeneutic method, a qualitative approach, the design was narrative-thematic, documentary-analytical, and cross-sectional. Academic sources published between 2017 and 2024 were analyzed and classified into thematic categories to contrast the different therapeutic perspectives. The results indicate that second-generation therapies, including Beck's cognitive therapy and Ellis's rational emotive behavior therapy, focus on modifying distorted beliefs to improve emotional regulation. In contrast, third-generation therapies, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and metacognitive therapy, prioritize the acceptance of internal experiences, mindfulness, cognitive defusion, and the identification of personal values as central strategies for regulating emotions. This paradigmatic shift reflects a transition from perspectives based on thought control to models that promote psychological flexibility and acceptance of emotional states. Despite their potential, some third-generation therapies still require more robust empirical validation. The study concludes that these therapies offer valuable tools for contemporary clinical contexts and recommends their exploration and implementation in therapeutic, educational, and community settings.
