The purpose of this article was to analyze problem-based learning (PBL) as a tool to optimize the academic performance of university mathematics students. In terms of methodology, the study was based on documentary research, since it was based on the review of 15 articles in the Scielo and Redalyc databases. Documentary analysis was used as a technique and, as instruments, literature review guides were used to systematize the search for information, in addition to analysis matrices to identify the advantages and challenges of PBA in academic improvement. Among the results, it was highlighted that PBA has been an effective methodology for the development of critical competencies, problem solving and academic improvement. Therefore, it was concluded that its success will always depend on teacher training and adaptation to specific educational contexts.
