Resumen

JESID DIAZ-BASTOS, Engelbert; ADRIANA GOMEZ-BOLANO, Cecilia  y  ISABEL MENDOZA-GRANADOS, Siria. Impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment on sustainable development. Agroecología Global [online]. 2025, vol.7, n.13, pp.4-27.  Epub 31-Oct-2025. ISSN 2665-0290.  https://doi.org/10.35381/a.g.v7i13.4568.

The growing use of electrical and electronic devices has led to an alarming increase in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) containing toxic substances that affect the environment and human health. The aim is to analyze the environmental, social, and educational impact of WEEE in the context of sustainable development. The research examines business practices such as planned obsolescence, low recycling rates, and non-compliance with regulations in Colombia despite the existing legal framework. It highlights the potential of WEEE as an opportunity for entrepreneurship as part of the circular economy. It suggests that environmental education and strategies such as good WEEE management practices contribute to the promotion of a culture of sustainability and social responsibility. It concludes that collective and educational action is needed to address this issue in Colombia.
