With the objective of determining the use of palatal rugoscopy as an identification tool in forensic dentistry, through the compilation and review of scientific articles, defining its importance, describing the Basauri method and determining the use and applications in human identification, a literature review was carried out from 2019 to 2024. A descriptive type of scientific research was carried out, where several literatures were collected in the Pubmed, Medline, Scielo, Google Scholar databases, among others. Keywords such as “Rugoscopy”, “forensic dentistry”, “Basauri method”, “palatal wrinkles”, “identorrugogram” were used, placing and selecting publications in different languages, between the period of 2019 - 2024. The literature collection was 100 bibliographies, 60 articles were excluded because it has little scientific load and 40 articles were read in its entirety and its information exposed to follow, being considered as inclusion criteria and presenting greater relevance in terms of human identification with the palatal rugoscopy method, according to Basauri's classification. It is concluded that rugoscopy is a low-cost method, which allows the identification of an individual by means of the palatine wrinkles due to its unique, immutable, individual and perennial characteristics, which allows the recognition of persons in disasters or catastrophes, where fingerprints or the identification of the victim are not possible due to the fact that it is not possible to identify the individual by means of the palatine wrinkles.
