Abstract

The participatory budget has been applied in different countries, as a model of participation of its inhabitants. The primary purpose of this systematic edition was to evaluate challenges and opportunities of participatory budgeting from the perspective of the residents. A systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA method. A search mechanism oriented to the origin of data from Scielo and Scopus was used. A mixture of keywords and descriptors was used, as well as Boolean operators (AND, OR AND NOT). Regarding the origin of the scientific articles chosen, of the 21 articles, 1 article came from Belgium, 1 from Poland, 1 from Denmark, 4 from Brazil, 1 from Indonesia, 1 from Hungary, 1 from Kenya, 3 from Spain, 1 from Austria, 1 from Cuba, 1 from Sweden, 2 from Ecuador, 1 from Mexico, 1 from Finland and 1 from South Africa. The findings that stand out in the implementation of participatory budgeting are synthesized at the local and regional level specifically of the way in which this mechanism can transform and improve the relationship between the government and the citizen in the future.
