Despite the progress of high-performance sports in the country, sports dentistry has not been fully integrated into health teams. This article analyzes the importance of dentistry in sports performance in Ecuador. To this end, a review of the literature was carried out, in the first phase the topic was approached from a general perspective, analyzing the role of dentistry and its link with sports performance. The second phase focused on the systematization of the study, where the selection of scientific articles in the field of sports and dentistry was carried out, with special emphasis on works carried out in Ecuador. The main databases were reviewed, such as Scopus, SciELO, PubMed, Dialnet and Redalyc. Articles in Spanish, English and Portuguese were considered, most of them not older than the last 5 years. This study confirms the relevance of dentistry in the optimization of sports performance, a subject that is still underdeveloped in the Ecuadorian context. Although in other countries dentistry has been integrated as a fundamental part of the integral care of athletes, in Ecuador awareness of this link is still limited.
