The objective was to demonstrate how public policies (PP) function in response to the environmental crisis. This is a systematic review article of research published in Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and SciELO. The PICO problem was: ¿How are public policies (I) implemented to reduce the environmental crisis (O) in affected communities (P), compared to other communities where they are not applied (C)? Using the PRISMA methodology, 228 documents were identified; 65 were selected; 38 met the eligibility criteria; and 16 were included in the final review. The inclusion criteria were: articles published between 2023 and 2024, with full text available, open access, original research articles related to the study categories, and with declared absence of conflicts of interest. The conclusion is: the implementation of modern, integrated, and participatory public policies is essential to mitigate the environmental crisis. The absence or insufficiency of such policies contributes to the worsening of the environmental crisis, increases inequalities, and limits the capacity to respond to emerging environmental threats.
