Abstract

GONZALEZ MANRIQUE DE LARA, David Abel; ORMENO CARMONA, Pedro Julián  and  HILARIO RIVAS, Jorge Luis. EFFECTS OF MORTAR ALIGNMENT ON THE DURABILITY AND STRENGTH OF MASONRY WALLS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW. Aula Virtual [online]. 2025, vol.6, n.13, e535.  Epub Oct 01, 2025. ISSN 2665-0398.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17037465.

The construction of masonry walls is a critical aspect of civil engineering, as their structural strength is essential for the safety of various buildings. The alignment of applied mortar has been shown to be a determining factor in improving this strength. This article aims to analyze the existing literature on the relationship between mortar alignment and the structural strength of masonry walls. The research was conducted as a systematic review article applying the PRISMA method (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses), compiling and analyzing various studies that assess the influence of mortar alignment on the mechanical performance of masonry walls. The most relevant findings indicate that proper mortar alignment not only increases the compressive strength of the walls but also enhances their durability under adverse environmental conditions. However, significant gaps were identified in the literature, particularly regarding extreme load conditions and the study of alignment techniques. These conclusions underscore the importance of developing standardized guidelines for mortar alignment in construction practice, with the potential to improve the safety and durability of structures in the future.
