Abstract
AYALA GOMEZ, Xiomara Marjorie and GOMEZ BAUTISTA, Ketty Verónica. STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW. Aula Virtual [online]. 2025, vol.6, n.13, e553. Epub Oct 25, 2025. ISSN 2665-0398. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17298893.
The study aimed to analyze the improvement strategies implemented in school environmental education through a systematic review of primary publications indexed in Scopus and SciELO (2018-2024), with the aim of identifying effective approaches to promoting ecological awareness and engagement in students. The PRISMA protocol was applied and inclusion and exclusion criteria were established; after screening, 14 studies were included. Designs with questionnaires and surveys, complemented by interviews, predominated, and primarily addressed early childhood and primary education levels in contexts in Latin America, Asia, and Europe. The results showed that integrated projects and curricular mainstreaming strengthened ecological awareness with an emphasis on waste reduction and school-community coordination; participatory activities fostered empathy toward nature; and teacher training with metacognitive and narrative approaches was associated with sustainable habits and a deeper understanding of environmental issues. Regarding preparedness for contamination situations, coherent curriculum planning, continuous monitoring, and efficient management of resources and materials were identified as critical components. Challenges linked to resource gaps and teacher training were recognized. In conclusion, strategies were most effective when integrated into the curriculum, continuously assessed, supported by teacher professional development, and connected to the community.
