In Latin America, food markets are important scenarios for food supply and the local economy. However, their daily operations entail the considerable generation of both organic and inorganic waste. Waste management faces significant challenges associated with deficiencies in infrastructure, regulations, social and cultural habits, and governance structures, which negatively impact public health, the environment, and the community as a whole. Therefore, the overall objective was to determine the challenges and opportunities in solid waste management in food markets in Latin America. A basic methodology was used: bibliographic and documentary analysis of 34 articles published in Scopus-indexed journals and 18 in SciELO between 2022 and 2025. The findings demonstrate that appropriate SRM contributes significantly to improving sanitary conditions, reducing environmental impact, and promoting sustainable practices within food markets. It was concluded that the reviewed studies have revealed that SRM in food markets represents an urgent challenge in Latin America due to its close relationship with people's health and environmental sustainability. Therefore, the challenges and opportunities facing the region directly impact sustainable development, the living conditions of citizens and the effectiveness of the food system.
