Abstract

Inventory control is crucial for improving operative efficiency and thus business profitability. This study addresses the topic of inventory control in mining industry, focusing on inventory management and the associated risks, highlighting the need for methodological approaches that improves the process. It utilizes a qualitative focus, specifically case study, in order to develop a thorough description of the units of analysis and its context. Inductive analysis and analytical-synthetic techniques are used for identifying patterns and understanding the study´s problem in an integral manner. The recollection of data is done through semi-structured interviews. Three conceptual categories for the treatment of information are employed: (a) Inventory management process and risk in mining industry; (b) Handling of surplus, shortages and obsolescence; and, (c) Collaboration with other departments. From these categories crucial strategies for improving the profitability of Agrimroc S.A. have been identified such as, from an adequate inventory management: fluid and organic communication between areas that represent the supply logistic process and handling, and the support of a complete system of information and up to date situation of items in control. It is important to point out that the findings in this work are valid exclusively for Agrimroc S.A., and in no way aim to be a generalization.
