At the Latin American level, the evolution of the informal sector is reflected in the increase in the number of people who have fewer opportunities to enter formal jobs, which affects their income level. This research analyzes the informal sector and poverty in Ecuador from 2019 to 2023 considering both macroeconomic and sociodemographic variables, for which data from the national survey of employment, unemployment and underemployment were used. A descriptive research based on the informal sector was applied and an analytical review was carried out using secondary bibliographic sources. The results show that in December 2023, 55.7% of the population was in informal employment; Among the main causes are: scarce jobs in the formal sector, area of residence, ethnicity, gender and level of education. The poverty rate is 23.90 per cent; The population groups with the highest rates are the indigenous and the Montubia; All these elements limit the economic and social development of the population employed in the informal sector, which has an impact on the country's economy.
