Abstract

VACA VELASTEGUI, Doménica Alexandra; SANCHEZ ROSERO, Leslie Nayelli  and  CORDOVA SANDOVAL, Paola Belén. Sign language and its importance in the medical field. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.1, e501025.  Epub Nov 18, 2024. ISSN 2739-0063.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10989121.

Hearing impairment is a limitation to perform certain activities of daily living, especially for communication. That is why they have developed other mechanisms such as sign language, which is a viable communication system to overcome this barrier. In view of this relevant issue, this study was prepared in order to identify the perception of citizens about sign language as a communication channel in medical care and the inclusion of people with disabilities in daily life. To this end, qualitative research was carried out through surveys applied to a group of people, belonging to the provinces of Guayas in the Coastal Region, Tungurahua in the Sierra Region and Sucumbíos in the Amazon Region of Ecuador. As it is a study in the field of health and of a non-experimental descriptive type, the STROBE method was used, which allowed us to obtain as the main result that people have very little knowledge about the use of sign language, in addition to the need for the medical area to promote their learning and awareness to provide specialized care to people with hearing disabilities and avoid violating their rights.

Keywords : hearing impairment; sign language; social inclusion.
