Herniation of the abdominal wall is the most common pathological entity encountered by pediatric surgeons worldwide. An inguinal hernia is a condition specific to humans, as they evolved to assume an upright position. Hernias are the most common pediatric surgical problem, accounting for 15% of pediatric surgical procedures. There are two surgical methods: open and laparoscopic. Open techniques include high cystic ligation and herniotomy. There are two methods of laparoscopic surgery: external and internal. Inguinal hernias in children are usually a protrusion of abdominal contents through an open vaginal process. The vaginal process is the exit of the peritoneum through the internal inguinal ring and usually closes spontaneously after the descent of the testicles. Incomplete occlusion of the vaginal process can lead to an abnormal connection between the abdominal cavity and the groin area. For the present research, medical and academic databases were used using relevant articles. During the search of these articles, we found important information about surgical treatment, what are the new therapies or surgical methods that are currently used. With this study, we emphasize the complexity that exists to carry out an adequate treatment for inguinal hernia in children, determining that a good diagnosis and treatment gives a good prognosis to the patient.
