Abstract

JIMENEZ VARGAS, Joselyn Nicole; VARGAS VARGAS, Dayana Nahomi  and  ZAMORA CAMPOVERDE, Michael Andres. Tariff and non-tariff barriers and their impact on Ecuadorian banana exporting companies to the USA in 2023. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.2, e502033.  Epub Feb 15, 2025. From the point of view of originality, this research stands out for its specific focus on the Ecuadorian banana sector during 2023, which provides an updated and pertinent perspective on the subject. The objective of the research is to determine the impact of tariff and non-tariff barriers on Ecuadorian banana exporting companies to the US in 2023. It was considered a mixed paradigm, since both quantitative and qualitative elements were integrated into its design and analysis. First, the quantitative approach was used to collect and analyse numerical data related to trade barriers, such as tariffs on banana exports, export volume, growth rates, and other relevant economic indicators. In terms of revenues, large companies showed consistent increases, reaching $3,098 million in 2023 and from $2,777 million in 2021. Midsize businesses also experienced significant growth, with revenues increasing from $363 million to $447 million during the period studied, reflecting strong financial health and ability to expand operations. The banana sector has been fundamental to the Ecuadorian economy, generating significant employment and contributing considerably to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This underscores the importance of policies that strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of the sector, ensuring continued economic benefits for rural communities and smallholders.

Keywords : trade barriers; banana exports; economic impact.
