This article conducts a documentary review on the implementation of socio-emotional learning (SEL) programs in basic education students, with the aim of analyzing their effectiveness in the development of soft skills. A comprehensive search methodology was used in several academic databases using key terms such as SEL, interpersonal skills, and basic education, selecting empirical studies and systematic reviews published during the last ten years. Key findings from this review reveal that SEL programs not only help improve school climate and reduce peer conflict, but also strengthen essential skills such as problem-solving, empathy, and collaboration. However, the crucial need for strong institutional commitment and adequate teacher training to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of these programmes is highlighted. This study concludes that SEL programs are essential for preparing students not only for academic success, but also for meeting the social-emotional challenges of their daily and future lives. Key recommendations are offered for the effective integration of SEL programs into the educational curriculum, emphasizing the importance of tailoring these programs to the specific needs of each school community. In addition, the importance of conducting additional longitudinal and comparative research to assess the long-term impact of SEL programs on students' well-rounded development and improved academic outcomes is highlighted.
