Abstract

ANZULES MOLINA, Douglas Ramón; ALCIVAR PINCAY, Gloria Anabel  and  CORRAL JOZA, Karen Elisa. The impact of sport on the quality of life of young people with intellectual disabilities: experiences and perspectives. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.2, e502043.  Epub Feb 15, 2025. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of sport on the quality of life of young people with intellectual disabilities, through their experiences and perspectives. A qualitative approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of how participation in adaptive sports influences various dimensions of their well-being. Participants were selected through purposive sampling and included five young athletes, five parents and two coaches with extensive experience in adaptive sport within the framework of the Special Olympics in Ecuador. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews and a focus group, using the GENCAT Scale as a reference framework to analyze the dimensions of quality of life. The results reveal that participation in adapted sports significantly improves young people's emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships, material well-being, personal and physical development, self-determination, and social inclusion. In addition, an increase in self-confidence, self-discipline and sense of belonging was identified. These findings highlight the importance of ensuring access to adapted sports opportunities to promote the inclusion and comprehensive well-being of young people with intellectual disabilities. The study suggests the need for further research into the long-term impact of adapted sport on this population.
