This research focuses on investment in research and development is a key component in the scientific and technological progress of any nation or institution. Its objective is to analyze the state of investment in research and scientific production in Ecuadorian universities, to determine the impact of such investment on the scientific production of public and private universities. The methodology combines quantitative and qualitative data obtained through an interview with university managers in charge of research and development. The main results reveal that 70% of universities offer incentives for academic publication, although many managers consider that these are not enough to motivate publication in high-impact journals. In terms of investment, universities allocate between 3% and 5% of their total budget to research, with only 30% of publications in indexed journals. In addition, 60% of managers indicate that the current infrastructure is not adequate to develop internationally competitive research, especially in areas such as modern laboratories and technological resources. To improve scientific production, it is essential to strengthen international cooperation, implement tax incentives for the private sector, and promote interdisciplinary projects. These actions would not only improve the quality and quantity of research, but would also increase the visibility of Ecuadorian universities in the global arena.
