YEPEZ BIMBOZA, Carmen Amelia; LLIQUIN PENA, Mónica Lorena and GUANGAJE PAGUAY, Marlene Elizabeth. Universal Design for Learning: an approach to developing 21st century competencies. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.3, e050306. Epub Mar 09, 2025. ISSN 2739-0063. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14019076.
The demand for developing 21st century competencies, such as critical thinking, creativity and collaboration, has placed the need to rethink pedagogical practices at the center of the educational discussion. In this sense, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) emerges as a promising alternative to respond to this demand, by offering a flexible and adaptable framework to design learning experiences according to students' needs and learning styles. A qualitative methodology was used, based on field research at an interpretive level and Action Research (AR) was considered as a method. Participant observation and field notes were used to collect information. Following the phases of the AI, an initial diagnosis of the observed and recorded situation was made, strategies were designed and implemented based on the principles of SAD, such as providing multiple forms of representation, action and expression, as well as strategies to develop 21st century competencies, such as creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. The results obtained show that the SAD is an effective tool for personalizing learning and developing key 21st century competencies in students, which will enable them to successfully face the challenges of a constantly evolving world.
