Abstract

LIMACHE RIVAS, Miguel Ángel. Solid waste pollution and its effects on the health of the urban population. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.3, e050343.  Epub Mar 29, 2025. ISSN 2739-0063.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14270926.

In recent times, the exponential growth of the world population has generated high levels of environmental pollution, which has had serious consequences for human health. The present study aims to identify and analyze the effects of solid waste pollution on the health of the urban population. For this purpose, a descriptive and qualitative systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA method. Study selection criteria were established based on the Google Scholar and Scopus databases, and a flow chart was drawn up detailing the filtering process of the results obtained. From the 1968 initial results, after several stages of selection and discarding, 16 articles were included that report various toxic compounds and types of waste in the environment, as well as the problems derived from the disposal of open dumps. The adverse effects of solid waste pollution include serious diseases such as cancer of the lungs, kidneys and skin, ulcers, nervous system damage and infections from contaminated water.

Keywords : pollution; solid waste; human health; environment; disease.
