FREIRE YARANGA, Melany Daniela; MORALES LOPEZ, Martha Giselle and COLLANTES ACUNA, Jenny Edith. Behavior management of patients with down syndrome in pediatric dentistry: a systematic review. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.3, e050390. Epub May 25, 2025. ISSN 2739-0063. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14559692.
The behavioral management of patients with Down syndrome in pediatric dentistry is a challenge due to the cognitive, emotional and behavioral characteristics associated with this condition. The problem lies in the difficulties faced by pediatric dentists in establishing cooperation during treatment, which can affect the quality of care and the well-being of the patient. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify effective strategies based on scientific evidence that optimize the interaction with these patients, improving their dental experience. A systematic review of scientific articles published between 2020 and 2024 in databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Elsevier and SciELO was performed. Keywords such as “Behavior management”, “Down syndrome” and “Pediatric dentistry” were used. Of a total of 74 articles found, 25 met the inclusion criteria, which focused on specific studies on behavioral management in pediatric dentistry. The results show that techniques such as positive reinforcement, progressive desensitization and adapted communication are key tools to improve patient cooperation. In addition, the preparation of the dental environment, the use of psychological strategies and interdisciplinary work contribute significantly to the success of treatment.Pediatric dentistry care of patients with Down syndrome requires a personalized and multidisciplinary approach. Continuing education of dentists in behavioral management and the implementation of evidence-based practices are essential to ensure comprehensive and humanized care.
