Abstract

LOPEZ, Rene Pedro Mendoza. Student perception on dropout and retention strategies in a technological higher education institution. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.4, e504076.  Epub June 12, 2025. ISSN 2739-0063.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14867944.

The purpose of the research was to determine the relationship between student dropout and the retention strategies applied by a technological higher education institution in Huarmey during the year 2024, within the framework of the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), according to the perception of the students. It was a correlational descriptive study with a quantitative approach and non-experimental design. The sample consisted of 202 students. For data collection, two questionnaires with closed questions were used: one for the student dropout variable (16 items) and another for the retention strategies variable (12 items). The validity of both instruments was established through the judgment of three experts, and their reliability was obtained from Cronbach's alpha coefficient, with values of α = 0.81214316 and α = 0.8025022, respectively. In addition, the focus group technique was used with the participation of 8 students. The results confirmed the general hypothesis: there is an inverse and significant relationship between student dropout and the retention strategies applied by the institution. In conclusion, it was determined that student dropout is significantly related (p = 0.000 < 0.01) with the implementation of retention strategies perceived by students at that institution.

Keywords : student dropout; student retention; support programs; sociocultural activity.
