Abstract

ANIBAL RIVEROHTTPS, Rafael Antonio et al. The impact of artificial intelligence on business innovation in SMEs: Perspective from higher education. Revista InveCom [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.4, e504102.  Epub June 12, 2025. ISSN 2739-0063.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15272784.

This article analyzed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on business innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the perspective of higher education. It examined how specialized academic training influences the adoption of AI in the business sector, focusing on its role in reducing the barriers faced by SMEs when incorporating emerging technologies. In addition, it was evaluated how higher education contributed to closing the gap in professional training in AI, strengthening competitiveness and innovation in these companies. The study adopted a quantitative-exploratory approach with a non-experimental design and intentional sampling. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were used, qualitatively analyzing teachers' perceptions of AI in SMEs. Likewise, various academic sources were analyzed that address both the opportunities and challenges that AI presents for SMEs, and the role of higher education in the training of professionals to lead these transformation processes. The results indicate that the adoption of AI in SMEs can boost innovation and improve competitiveness. However, significant challenges were identified, such as a shortage of trained personnel and limited resources, which make it difficult to implement. In this context, the inclusion of specialized AI training within educational programs is crucial for SMEs to overcome these barriers and take advantage of the opportunities offered by technology.
