Abstract

CAMPI-SANCHEZ, Geovanny Franklin; MERINO-SANCHEZ, Wilson Yovanny  and  DELGADO-RODRIGUEZ, Ramiro Nanac. Child support obligations and socioeconomic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Babahoyo. Noesis [online]. 2025, vol.7, n.esp1, pp.936-949.  Epub Nov 30, 2025. ISSN 2739-0365.  https://doi.org/10.35381/noesisin.v7i1.456.

This study addressed child support obligations and the socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Babahoyo canton during the 2020-2021 period. The objective was to critically analyze the situation of maintenance debtors in the face of unemployment and reduced income, within the framework of the Children and Adolescents Code and the General Organic Code of Procedures. A quantitative methodology was applied through surveys of legal professionals linked to the Judicial Unit for Family, Women, Children, and Adolescents, with a sample of 62 participants. The results showed that the decrease in basic wages and job loss were decisive factors in the non-payment of child support, while the majority of respondents rejected the relevance of enforcement orders in this context. It was concluded that the pandemic violated fundamental rights and created tensions between the best interests of the child and the human dignity of the debtors.
