SUAREZ-GARCIA, María Esther; HERRERA, Karen; RIVAS BARAHONA, María Lastenia  e  AVILES CASTILLO, Alma Celeste. Experience of educational innovation in breastfeeding using a social robot at a military hospital in Nicaragua. Rev Cien CMDLT [online]. 2023, vol.17, n.1, e-239359.  Epub 28-Mar-2025. Objective:

To describe the results of an educational intervention on exclusive breastfeeding (BF) with the Temi social robot, aimed at patients in the immediate postpartum period attended at the Hospital Militar Escuela Dr. Alejandro Dávila Bolaños (HMADB), Managua, Nicaragua.

Materials and methods:

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with 150 patients from February to July 2023. An online survey was administered before and after the lecture on EBF given by the social robot to obtain the results on knowledge acquired and to determine the level of satisfaction with the educational intervention performed by the robot.

Results:

85% of the patients obtained maximum scores in the BF surveys after the Temi robot talk. The t-student test obtained a significance very close to 0 when comparing pre- and post-challenge results. The topics on BF that obtained the best results were: why not to give other foods, practices that favor the adequate initiation of BF and meaning of exclusive breastfeeding, with an increase in correct answers of 28.67%, 27.33% and 21.33%, respectively. The rate of satisfaction with the robot intervention was 85.33% and 89.33% of the patients recommended it. The binary logistic regression model showed that the language factor (of the robot) contributed to satisfaction and to the improvement of acquired knowledge (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

a significant increase in knowledge about BF was achieved with the educational intervention of the social robot, with a high degree of acceptance by the patients.
