Resumen

QUINTERO, Velmar Alberto. Asthma and allergic rhinitis: One path one disease. Control of adolescent asthmatic patients. e-Rev. Multidiscip. Saber [online]. 2024, vol.2, e-RMS04122024.  Epub 03-Jun-2025. ISSN 2960-2467.  https://doi.org/10.61286/e-rms.v2i.54.

Asthma and allergic rhinitis in adolescents with inadequate control lead to significant challenges, such as school absenteeism and emotional problems stemming from these conditions. The objective of the research is to establish a theoretical framework that considers asthma and allergic rhinitis as a single pathological entity, thus facilitating better management of both diseases. Using a qualitative approach based on complex thinking, different perspectives on the interrelationship between these conditions were explored. In-depth interviews were conducted with six adolescents diagnosed with asthma and allergic rhinitis, as well as with their families and three medical specialists (a pulmonologist, an otolaryngologist, and an adolescent pediatrician). From the discourse analysis, four emerging categories were identified: symptoms, impact, rhinitis-asthma association, and treatment. The results indicate that participants recognize the need for an integrated approach to treatment, considering “one airway, one disease.” This approach not only improves the understanding of the interrelationships between both conditions but also suggests that coordinated management could optimize asthma control in adolescents. In conclusion, highlights the importance of integrating the treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma to improve the quality of life of young patients.
