MOROCHO ESPINOZA, Narcisa Estefanía et al. Integral and cultural approaches in nursing intervention in the pediatric intensive care unit for patients with acute respiratory failure. e-Rev. Multidiscip. Saber [online]. 2024, vol.2, e-RMS09122024.  Epub 03-Jun-2025. ISSN 2960-2467.  https://doi.org/10.61286/e-rms.v2i.126.

Acute respiratory failure is one of the leading causes of admission to pediatric intensive care units (ICUs), presenting a critical challenge in managing children with severe respiratory conditions. This article reviews sixteen studies on nursing interventions aimed at improving respiratory outcomes in this population. The strategies include the implementation of standardized protocols such as the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT), invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV and NIMV), high-flow oxygen therapy, and continuous monitoring of respiratory parameters. The role of nursing staff in preventing complications, educating caregivers, and applying a comprehensive approach that considers cultural and social factors is highlighted. The results indicate that evidence-based interventions optimize clinical parameters, reduce complications, improve the patient's quality of life, and decrease hospital stays. However, areas for improvement were identified, such as the need for ongoing training and the integration of cultural approaches into care. This analysis emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary and personalized approach centered on the holistic well-being of the child and their family to promote quality care in critical settings. The combination of clinical strategies with cultural considerations can significantly enhance patient experience and outcomes in pediatric intensive care.
