Abstract
PAREDES NUNEZ, Cynthia Lissette et al. Evaluation of the Quality of Nursing Care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units from the Perspective of Parents or Caregivers. e-Rev. Multidiscip. The quality of nursing care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is essential to ensure the well-being of neonates and their caregivers. This study aimed to design, validate, and apply an instrument to evaluate caregivers' perceptions of the quality of care in NICUs. The Parental Satisfaction Scale in NICUs (PSS-NICU) was developed, which included 16 questions distributed across four dimensions: Information and Communication, Empathy and Emotional Support, Participation in Care, and Organization and Environment. The instrument proved to be reliable, with an overall Cronbach's alpha of 0,89. It was applied to 36 caregivers through non-probabilistic sampling, obtaining generally positive results. The best-rated dimensions were Organization and Environment (85,00% positive responses) and Empathy and Emotional Support (73,00%), reflecting the nursing staff's effort to create a safe environment and provide empathetic care. However, Information and Communication showed greater variability in responses (13,00% disagreement), indicating areas for improvement in personalizing information. Participation in Care received the lowest rating (42,00% positive), suggesting the need to more actively include caregivers in the care process. This study highlights the importance of a comprehensive and humanized approach in NICUs, based on effective communication, emotional support, and parental inclusion, to optimize both caregivers' experience and health outcomes.
